A Reflection of Choreographic Tasks/ Process

In our first lesson, we were put into groups and were given 6 images to analyse. From this, we added our perspective onto each stimulus and how this could be portrayed in choreography.

  (Kurucz, 2018)

This stimulus was developed as a class after we had analysed the other images. From the image, you can see one of the ideas developed was the colour pink was used in prisons to help tranquilize feelings of anger. (Alter, 2015) The author researched that if you stare at the colour pink for 2 minutes you weaken in strength. Through choreography, the first 2 minutes could be sharp dynamics, afterwards, movements could less powerful such as a low develope into a bum roll.

Stimulus one shows a deep meaning of "Behind the mask of indifference is bottomless misery and behind apparent callousness, despair."(Bubly, 2021) This reinforces the idea that no one is perfect and neither makeup nor coverage will help your suffering. (Cosba, n.d, 2021)

We were put into groups of three of which stimulus we liked the most. I chose stimulus one because I thought the tear of paper on the eye was a flower at first and when I realised it was a tear in the paper I was intrigued as to how or why this was there. I think an inconsistent piece of music would reflect this image as it would show the imperfect structure. The structure of the dance could follow the pattern of the image- Ballet could change into contemporary/ neoclassical to show the torn parts and the imperfect side.

To help start the choreographic process we watched a video called "The Six Sides of Merce Cunningham". This video described the Chance Method and the practitioner study- Merce Cunningham. (The six sides of Merce Cunningham, 2021)

After watching this video the chance method was used to create a piece of choreography linked to the stimulus. We came up with 6 movements and labelled them 1-6 and rolled a dice 6 times to determine what numbers would be chosen.

Our first roll was a jump in levels shown from the image on the left. A classical jump showed the beginning of the perfect structure on the stimulus. Later on in the piece, the stimulus was portrayed using a turn miming tearing parts of the body away. This linked back to the stimulus because it reinforces the idea of taking away parts of you to show the imperfect side.

Although no challenges were encountered a problem that could occur is finding a piece of music that has the right structure to portray the image.
