Choreographic Devices - Practitioner Study

For this weeks choreography task we focused on the choreographer Wayne Mcgregor, to start off with we watched a Ted Talk show of him choreographing using two of his dancers from his company. In the video you learn that he thinks of choreography as physical thinking. Wayne Mcgregor- Tedtalk  (Mcgregor 2012)

From watching this video we then created a table of four sections labelled Actions, Dynamics, Space and Choreographic devices. After creating a list for each section we numbered each description from one to four. With the four new lists we then had to create a small section of choreography using the information we had created.

This is an image of my table that was made in the lesson, I came up with the words by thinking about the stimulus and what words came to mind and then thought of how a movement could be danced to represent the stimulus. The first list of four is shown in the next video

This video shows the action of taking a picture with slow dynamics. When I start walking the representation of the picture is shown by the wafting of the polaroid after the picture has been taken. This set of choreography links back to the stimulus because it portrays how the picture was taken- from a camera.

I found this task was very useful for creating choreography in a quick time spam. Using the sets helped me create movements I wouldn't usually think of because an action had a different dynamic to one I would normally choose. Creating the movements felt easier to link back to the stimulus because the vocabulary was relevant to the stimulus and the theme. Although creating the movement was easier because there was more structure to follow, it was also hard to think of movements that followed that same structure. For example the third set- Action (Using parts of your body to hide the rest of your body) Dynamics (Friction) Choreographic device (Retrograde). This set was hard to create choreography for because I was unsure how to show show the backwards motion of the choreography.

I think I will use this creative choreography process in the future because it stops you from creating choreography that isn't linked to the stimulus however, I will think more about what descriptions are in each set so that it doesn't make the movement look awkward or unbalanced.
