My Stimulus and Further Research

I chose this stimulus because I liked developing the thought of growing old and the idea of showing movement to represent the realisation of growing up. The book I remember nothing by Nora Ephron talks about the frustration of aging and how it can affect you with memory loss. The quote "some of the annoying and often absurd failings that the advancing years bring with them" shows the mental struggle with growing old. (Ephron 2010)

I would like to use the idea of struggling mentally with getting old and showing frustration through movement as the theme for the choreography. My end goal is to be able to portray a clear message through my choreography to show the audience the mental and physical struggles of aging.

The stimulus makes me think about the fear of exposing your flaws and insecurities. The tears in the picture resemble the sense of being secretive about yourself because there is an older lady behind the younger woman, it is almost as if the older woman is embarrassed to show the older "imperfect self". Although this makes me feel disappointed in human society that you should hide your flaws I would also like to use this as an opportunity to show the beauty of aging- It shows grace and maturity.

As shown from the image to the left I have used the Wayne Mcgregor technique that I learned about last week. I think that this creative process works well for me because all the devices and actions are already linked to the stimulus and it allows you to explore movement which I would never usually think of. In the beginning section, it is very much gesture-based to represent the picture of the women. The picture of me holding a camera is to show the action of taking a picture using a polaroid camera. I think that this is a good action to start the choreographic piece because it is portraying how the stimulus was created.

In conclusion, I am very happy with my choreography process so far as I have chosen an appropriate song to compliment the stimulus and the theme of the piece. The song is called "Instrumental 1 by viewfinder", this piece of music starts with a sudden beat which is then followed by quick beats in a 4/4 time signature. It starts with a piano and later on in the song it flows into a Jazz style of music. I think that this could help show the lighter side of aging and aid to a more happy performance.
