My Chosen Practitioner

My chosen practitioner is Wayne Mcgregor because I am intrigued by his creative process. Before I was able to experience the creative process that he uses I would think that his choreography process is interesting however, I never fully understood the task. After trying his method I have found that it suits me very well because it helps me explore my mind but also it is an efficient way of creating choreography. Wayne Mcgregors work is very extraordinary because he likes to think that creating choreography is physical thinking. He also uses a lot of imagery to show in his movement. For example, imagining the letter "T" and thinking that he is inside the T. When choreographing for his dancers, he likes to use improvisation so that his dancers can take an idea from a body and transfer it into another body. The dancers aren't given music, they respond to his counting such as the words "um, bay, bay, a". Another way he works with his dancers is he encourages people ...

My Stimulus and Further Research

Image
I chose this stimulus because I liked developing the thought of growing old and the idea of showing movement to represent the realisation of growing up. The book I remember nothing by Nora Ephron talks about the frustration of aging and how it can affect you with memory loss. The quote " some of the annoying and often absurd failings that the advancing years bring with them" shows the mental struggle with growing old. (Ephron 2010)  I would like to use the idea of struggling mentally with getting old and showing frustration through movement as the theme for the choreography. My end goal is to be able to portray a clear message through my choreography to show the audience the mental and physical struggles of aging.  The stimulus makes me think about the fear of exposing your flaws and insecurities. The tears in the picture resemble the sense of being secretive about yourself because there is an older lady behind the younger woman, it is almost as if the older woman is embarras...

Choreographic Devices - Practitioner Study

Image
For this weeks choreography task we focused on the choreographer Wayne Mcgregor, to start off with we watched a Ted Talk show of him choreographing using two of his dancers from his company. In the video you learn that he thinks of choreography as physical thinking.  Wayne Mcgregor- Tedtalk    (Mcgregor 2012) From watching this video we then created a table of four sections labelled Actions, Dynamics, Space and Choreographic devices. After creating a list for each section we numbered each description from one to four. With the four new lists we then had to create a small section of choreography using the information we had created.  This is an image of my table that was made in the lesson, I came up with the words by thinking about the stimulus and what words came to mind and then thought of how a movement could be danced to represent the stimulus. The first list of four is shown in the next video  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRlgOyKkOQ0   This video sh...

A Critique of Justin Pecks “In The Countenance of Kings”

The first thoughts from watching the YouTube video “In The Countenance of Kings” by Justin Pecks were that there is a main them of reflection such as mirroring. The music was very upbeat and the dancers responded to the music well by changing dynamics as the tempo of the music changed. The main colours of the piece were dark red, blue, beige and orange. The start of the video started in a studio and there was a change of scenery to an old building. ( San Francisco Ballet, 2016) Watching the piece confused me to begin with because I was unsure as to what the story line was however, I became entranced by how controlled the chaos was. In a lot of the sections, there are a lot of dancers doing different things such as when there is a pas de deux couple which is then joined by 3 couples performing the same choreography. Although the movements had sharp dynamics and were very quick, each movement flowed into the next section. The continuity of sharp dynamics in particular sections c...
