Evaluation

I think the choreography solo went well as there was a clear narrative behind the piece and the research behind choreography techniques guided me to create new movements and motifs which I never would've thought of.  I enjoyed this module as it pushed me mentally to always relate the movement back to the story and physically create a movement that could portray a message. There were moments during the module where I struggled to create a movement/ phrase because I was worried that it wouldn't look "perfect" or it wouldn't compliment the rest of the dance. Moving forward from this I began with the basics, any movement that came to mind I would use and then develop once I had put together a small phrase. I would develop this by analysing what this movement portrayed to the audience and what could be changed to make it clear why it would be linked to the stimulus.  In the future, I will take more opportunities to practice the solo in a studio space by myself so I ca...

Further Creative Development

When I started the choreographic process I wanted to show the insecurities of ones self and the fact that no one is perfect despite trying to conceal the reality of truth. Looking further into the stimulus and research about hiding behind something I decided that to me, the stimulus resembled an old person who is struggling both mentally and physically with the body not working as well as it used to however, there is a section at the end to show acceptance of the body changing. I wanted the audience to feel that whilst watching the piece they could look back to the stimulus and have a clear understanding of why the choreography linked back to the stimulus. I think this has been achieved because as the piece progressed I took on the feedback from my teacher and peers who said if the intention behind the eyeline, movement or message of the piece was lost.  During the choreographic process I have enjoyed the research that I have found out about the development of the brain as we matur...

Critique 3 – Wayne McGregor- Piece 3: Infra

In this blog I will be critiquing Piece 3- Infra by Wayne McGregor.  (Royal Opera House 2021)   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjERnGQiJfg At the beginning of the video, you see a male and female dancer walk downstage with a calm intent. The piece is initiated by the two dancers contracting the shoulders inwards, then rotating them outwards. Whilst this is happening the male dancer steps backwards into a lunge with the front leg turned out to support the female dancer who goes into a ponche. Throughout the piece, some lifts highlight the female dancer's extensions and the male dancer's strength. At 1 minute there is an emphasis on the use of arms and the connection to both of the dancers through the arms. This is shown when the male dancer holds onto the upper arm of the female dancer and supports her in a promenade. At 2 minutes the female dancer is on pointe and is supported by the male dancer as he holds her hips and glutes in a ponche. Towards the end of the pi...

Continued Creative Development

Image
Continuing on from a past blog, this blog is about the continued creative development of the choreography piece. There is a climax point towards the middle section of the piece to show the breaking point of aging. In this section there is a big jump followed by three fouettes. Before, the jump was a split sissonnes which was a highlight. However, now it is a stag jump with flexed feet and hands to show an imperfect jump which links back to the stimulus as it is portraying the imperfect self. Some feedback that was given in this section was that it wasn't clear as to what the fouettes resembled. Moving forward from this I have used the arms to show a ripping action during the turn sequence. This is to show the tears in the picture. As said from before I watched a video of me performing the solo and I can see where it becomes obvious in the choreography when the intention is lost behind the movement. To keep the message shown throughout I have tried to maintain incorrect posture espe...
